  EVENT SUMMARY

Event Title:

The Accidental Ministry of John Cotton, Jr.

Full Description:

John Cotton, Jr., the second son of one of the most famous clergymen of New England’s founding generation, was a missionary to Native Americans on Martha’s Vineyard and pastor of
the First Church in Plymouth for over thirty years. However, during his younger days, Cotton’s involvement in a sexual scandal almost cost him
his career and forced him to reinvent himself. Join Len Travers, professor of history at UMASS Dartmouth, as he explores the letters of John Cotton, Jr. and illustrates how his correspondence
sheds light on late 17th Century New England life.
